HOUGHTON LAKE AMBULANCE AUTHORITY
Paramedic Field Training Program
Phase 1
This program is to ensure consistent thorough training for all newly licensed Paramedics. Staff progress will be overseen by the management and education department.
The Paramedic in training will have an orientation period that will consist of third rides for a minimum of 118 hours where the PIT will work supervised by an experienced Paramedic at all times.
During Phase 1 the PIT will study the NCMCA advanced life support protocols and current medications carried by the service.
The PIT will have one on one discussions with management or education coordinator pertaining to all ALS protocols prior to release from
Phase 1.
Once PIT shows a general competency for the protocols they will be given the NCMCA ALS protocol test.
The PIT will have an in depth introduction to the use of the following ALS equipment: Lifepak 12, IV pump, Cricothyrotomy kit, Needle cric/decompression kit, IV equipment and Intubation equipment.
The PIT will be trained on documentation including patient reports, non-transport reports, 3200 forms, required reporting incidents and
PSRO requirements for ALS calls.

approved prior to their administration.

and proficiency with all of the required ALS protocols, medications, skills and equipment. The PIT must require no further guidance on
calls and can take the lead on any and all emergency situations.
On release from Phase 2 the Paramedic will be able to work unsupervised with Basic EMTs.
